The European Parliament

Whilst EU Commissioners are appointed by their specific national governments and the EU president is appointed by the Council, Members of the EU Parliament, MEPs, are actually elected by the citizens in their respective countries. This makes them directly accountable to us.

Members of this House rely on the support of their electorate. Their ambitions and career depend on finding favour with those that they are privileged to serve, making it crucial that our campaign lets these individuals know that their people are fed up with hypocrisy and injustice.

The European Parliament is composed of 736 MEPs (Member of the European Parliament) who are directly elected every five years by the citizens of their individual Member States.

The Parliament sits on occasion in Strasbourg, France, although Parliamentary meetings and committees are usually held at the Espace Léopold complex in Brussels.

The European Parliament has the power to reject or amend legislation but it cannot propose any legislation of its own. What it can do, however, is prompt the European Commission to propose new legislation.

A significant power of the European Parliament lies in the fact that it has the "Ear of Brussels" granting it and its members the ability to significantly sway the opinion of influential policy makers and journalists.

As our representatives in Brussels it's absolutely vital that these individuals are not only listening to what we have to say, but making the necessary moves to relay our sentiment wherever possible and to whom ever possible, with the aim of making our voices heard.

Your MEP needs to know that you're not in favour of state-run monopolies and that you're disgusted by that fact that Member State Governments are restricting a consumers freedom of choice for their own financial gains.

Use our handy tool to send them an email expressing your thoughts on the topic and do let us know if they get back to you with a response!
